Hot on the heels of Forgiveness Rock Record, it’s Broken Social Scene: The Movie! Well, kind of.
This Movie is Broken: A Rock Show Romance, from Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, The Tracey Fragments) follows two friends with budding romantic interests that can (and probably will) only come to fruition at a a Broken Social Scene concert.
From the press release: “Bruno wakes up in bed next to Caroline, his longtime crush. But tomorrow she’s off for school in France, and maybe she only granted this miracle as a parting gift for her long time friend. So tonight — tonight is Bruno’s last chance. And tonight, as it happens, Broken Social Scene, her favorite band, is throwing a big outdoor bash. Maybe if Bruno, with the help of his best pal Blake, can score tickets and give Caroline a night to remember, he can keep this miracle alive.”
In effort to “create a visual mosaic that captures [Toronto] and the summer,” McDonald, in collaboration with Arts & Crafts, strung together footage from a 2009 BSS show and fan-shot media with a non-performance narrative that’s sure to make you roll your eyes a little.
So, equal parts Amanda Seyfried romcom and The Stoned Age, This Movie is Broken looks to be far from the proper concert film the band deserves; from what we can tell, it will be more like an indie-rock episode of The Hills. Still, there’s no doubt that BSS will provide a terrific sonic backdrop to the romantic plot, so file this one up under plan for the worst, hope for the best.
This Movie is Broken: A Rock Show Romance opens on June 25 in Toronto and Vancouver. Watch the trailer and find local screenings at www.thismovieisbroken.com.
