I may be wearing a ski cap and five layers as I write this, but it does seem as though winter’s dreariness is waning. If nothing else, there’s a boatload of new music to brighten the coming weeks, and we’ll happily crank all of it at full volume to shut out the sound of the non-stop rain.

New She & Him material surfaced today, and it doesn’t get much warmer and sunnier than M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel’s brand of feel-good pop. A new track, “Thieves” is up and streaming at Stereogum right now. It’s off the duo’s forthcoming Volume Two album, which Merge will release on March 23.

Tom “Tobacco” Fec, meanwhile, doesn’t have what you’d call a cheery disposition, but his 2008 album, Fucked Up Friends, was one of the year’s most solid releases, and the Black Moth Super Rainbow frontman has announced a follow-up. This time around, he’s reeled in the talents of Beck, who’s a reported fan of Fucked Up Friends and collaborated on two songs for the forthcoming Maniac Meat. A couple of guys who share a love for trippy, hyper-experimental music and titles like “Fresh Hex” and “Grape Aerosmith” are bound to create a winning album. Maniac Meat is out May 25 via Anticon.

Also back for another full-length is Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Drag City will release the album, titled The Wonder Show of the World, on March 23 (it’s technically being billed under Bonnie “Prince” Billy & the Cairo Gang). A new song, “Play, Guitar, Play” is not slated to appear on the album, but is up and streaming at the label’s site.

Now, it wouldn’t be a news roundup without a tidbit or two regarding rock’s resident workaholic, Jack White. The one and only has a new video on the way, for his Dead Weather band’s “Die By the Drop.” There’s no actual clip yet, but Floria Sigismondi, who directed the White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid” video, is on board again. The song is off the Dead Weather’s forthcoming new album, which will drop in April.

Speaking of workaholics, Madlib’s back. The Beat Konducta himself has another album out, under the guise The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble—which is reportedly an offshoot of Yesterdays Universe, which arose after the demise of Yesterdays New Quintet. Hopelessly confusing monikers aside, Miles Away is 10 tracks produced and arranged by Madlib, and it’s out today. Go to the Stones Throw site to order a copy, and to download a free track, “Tones for Larry Young.”

Earlier last month, Memphis garage-rock pioneer Jay Reatard passed away at the age of 29. According to The Memphis Commerical Appeal, Reatard—born Jimmy Lindsey Jr.—was found dead in his home. The same paper revealed autopsy details today. Shelby County Medical Examiner Dr. Karen E. Chancellor stated that Reatard died from “cocaine toxicity,” and that “alcohol was a contributing factor in his death.”

Meanwhile, Tim Goldsworthy, who, along with James Murphy, founded DFA Records and has played a vital role in its growth and success, has reportedly split from the label, leaving New York for the UK. Label manager Jonathan Galkin told Resident Advisor that “Tim Goldsworthy moved away to somewhere in the United Kingdom, without informing anyone here at DFA. We have had no word from him since he left the United States. So we moved on with our lives and our business. Simple as that. He most definitely took a piece of us when he left, but we wish him the best with whatever he gets up to next.” Hostile split? Goldsworthy told Resident Advisor he left because of work and family obligations in the UK, and that he would be willing to do more work for the label “if something good came along.”

DFA isn’t the only US record label having a slightly chaotic week. Indie rap imprint Definitive Jux was at the epicenter of internet hype yesterday, when rumors that it would fold arose. Label boss and rapper/producer El-P has posted a statement clarifying the situation. “As a traditional record label, DEF JUX will effectively be put on hiatus. We are not closing, but we are changing,” he writes. He adds, in his statement, that the label is busy “re-imagining” its future. Its website and merch catalog will continue to exist in the meantime.

In brighter news, Jack White is still with us and going strong. Music’s busiest man promises a new album with his band The Dead Weather, a follow-up to last year’s Horehound. A Dead Weather tour is set to kick-off in mid-March, right around the time The White Stripes live film, Under Great White Northern Lights, gets release in box set form.

Midlake’s latest album, The Courage of Others, was released this week on Bella Union. The Guardian asked the band to perform the album as part of its Denton Sessions. You can download the set here.

Finally, Bright Eyes is back. Sort of. News in 2009 suggested that Conor Oberst and Co. will make one more album under their famed indie moniker. There are no album details yet, other than an unamed 2010 release date, but Saddle Creek is reissuing the Bright Eyes/Neva Dinova split, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, this March (pre-orders are available right now). Four new Bright Eyes tracks, written in fall 2009, will be included in the release.

Seven mere days into the new year, Jack White, not surprisingly, is already announcing new releases, the latest from The Dead Weather. White and the band are currently in the studio recording a second album, the early sessions of which they’ve turned into a new 7″.

Don’t go speeding off to the record store just yet though. The single, which features takes of new tracks “No Horse” and “Jawbreaker,” will only be available through the Third Man Records Vault subscription service, and the package is well worth the price tag.

A subscription will buy not just the Dead Weather single, but also a double LP with every Third Man release from 2009 and a couple new goodies as well. Rockabilly’s First Lady, Wanda Jackson, recently collaborated with White on an album’s worth of material, and two covers—Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over”—are available through the service. Additionally, a single from female garage-rock group Black Belles, discovered by White, will be available via the subscription.

Lastly, don’t forget about the forthcoming White Stripes live box set, which is currently available for pre-order at the Third Man site.

Holidays and winter months are ahead, which means that tours are winding down many of our favorite artists will get some well-deserved R&R for a couple months.

Jack White is not among them, and as usual, that’s entirely by choice. The White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather captain–a.k.a. the busiest man in the biz–will fill his forthcoming days off with another project, recording a new LP for 72-year-old icon Wanda Jackson (Via P4K).

Jackson’s resume includes a career that spans multiple decades, a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a brief relationship with Elvis Presley (who also mentored her), and more or less being the First Lady of rockabilly. White, in addition to his gazillion other projects, produced Loretta Lynn’s 2004 album Van Lear Rose. Jackson told The Oklahoman that “they had a super album, but he didn’t have her do anything different. She just did her little Loretta Lynn songs. But he told me he’s gonna stretch me some.”
