The band is showing off some new music, namely, a 12″ entitled “The Suburbs/Month of May” that’s, according to a “postcard” addressed to The Internet, going to hit stores in the next couple of weeks.

The tracks are about as night-and-day as it gets, “The Suburbs” being a bright, jazzy tune filled with upbeat pianos and strumming. “Month of May” is more about shredding the hell out of the electric guitar. Granted, these “previews” make the ones on iTunes feel epic in length, but they give at least a fraction of an idea of the kinds of sounds the Montreal rockers are pursuing these days.

The album will be released in February, and excerpts from selected tracks are currently available at Gabriel’s site. Additionally, Stereogum is streaming his version of Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage.”

Scratch My Back is out February 15 on Virgin. Gabriel has also announced a handful of shows that will kick of in March. Dates are below, along with the new album’s cover art.

“The songs are not simply covers,” frequent collaborator John Metcalfe told BBC 6 Music. “They are quite major reinterpretations of some famous stuff.” Reinterpretations that will, reportedly, be performed chamber music-style, with an orchestra, and nary a guitar or drum to be found. “It’s quite radical and we’re hoping that people really get it and enjoy it,” Metcalfe says.
