R.I.P. Alex Chilton

Alex Chilton

Some very upsetting news today—singer, songwriter, and producer Alex Chilton died from heart complications at a hospital in New Orleans. He was 59 years old.

The Memphis-born musician was best known for his work in ’60s-era pop outfit the Box Tops, and as a member of power-pop group Big Star. Chilton later amassed cult icon status during his indie label solo career, planting the seed of influence on acts like R.E.M, Teenage Fanclub, Primal Scream, and the Replacements, who went on to immortalize Chilton with Pleased to Meet Me’s “Alex Chilton.”

Chilton is survived by his wife, Laura, a son, Timothy, and a sister, Cecilia.
