Warren Hildebrand, a.k.a. Toronto’s Foxes in Fiction gives Memoryhouse’s recent dream pop hit, “Lately (Deuxième),” the cover treatment. Hildebrand’s version doesn’t deviate much from the original in terms of mood or style, keeping it on par with the Memoryhouse recording. Hildebrand explains that the track was recorded by “bouncing some of the guitar tracks to and from [a] tape machine about three times,” and without samples. His redux is below, along with the original Memoryhouse recording.

Foxes In Fiction’s debut album, Swung From the Branches, is available now via Orchid Tapes, a cassette based record label run by Mr. Hildebrand himself. Threw away your tape players? Orchid Tapes also offers the album up as a free download over at his blog.

Noah Lennox returns with a dizzy carousel of a song that's the b-side to his latest single.

The dizzy carousel of a song that is “Slow Motion” also happens to be the b-side to Panda Bear’s new (and quite long-awaited) single “Tomboy.” A high quality stream is up right now over at Pitchfork.

The track seems ironically titled, what with the reverb-packed guitar riffs and seemingly endless vocal loops; if only I knew what Noah Lennox was actually saying. It’s Panda Bear at his hip-hoppiest, and it’s not difficult to imagine Andre Nickatina rhyming over this one.

“Tomboy” is out now via Paw Tracks. Next down the line for Lennox is another single on Domino, “You Can Count On Me” b/w “Alsatian Darn.” The former has already been covered by Svilla, whose version is based solely off live performances of the song floating around the web.

West Coast rap legend MC Eiht (you’ll know him as lead member of Compton’s Most Wanted, maybe also for his role in Menace 2 Society) jumps on board to lend his voice to this remix for Dam-Funk.

The electro-funk-addled original appeared on Dam-Funk’s epic, five-LP release Toeachizown (2009). A new single, which includes this remix along with a song from the forthcoming Dam-Funk/Steve Arrington collaboration and a couple re-edits, will drop on Stones Throw sometime this summer.
Forgive the LOST reference, but Abe Vigoda seem to have gone from “the island” to “the hatch” with this new track.

On Abe Vigoda’s last release, the Revival EP, the Los Angeles, CA-based band shed their well established “tropical punk” sound like a snake leaving its past skin behind to move into a darker territory that sounds more like These New Puritans or Liars. Forgive the LOST reference, but they seemed to have gone from “the island” to “the hatch.”

Now they have a brand new track available, “Throwing Shade.” If the jam is any indication of what the rest of band’s fourthcoming album, Crush, will sound like (fist pumping drum- and-basslines fit for the dance floor; layers of synths), we’re in for yet another sonic surprise. I wonder how long until this one gets a remix.

The song is the first to surface off Dondero's forthcoming #Zero With a Bullet, which Team Love will release August 3.

Minnesota-born David Dondero long ago staked his name in the Narrative American songwriting territory—and further wedges it into that particular ground on this song. We’ve all heard the phrase “Wherever you go, there you are” (I think I had it unironically taped to my doorway as a teenager), but never in the foot-stomping, picking party-worthy form that it appears in here.

The song is the first to surface off Dondero’s forthcoming #Zero With a Bullet, which Team Love will release August 3. Listen and download right here.

Dondero, in just a couple of days, will take his backing band and banjo on a seriously long North American tour. Dude’s schedule is close to rivaling a certain other musical act that tends to favor epic tour schedules.

Jenny Lewis/Jonathan Rice fans are well aware by now that the girlfriend/boyfriend pair are about ready to release a collaborative debut album under their Jenny and Johnny moniker. There’s the album cover above, simultaneously cutesy and saucy, which seems to aptly sum up the entire project, or at least what we’ve heard of it so far.

There’s a rumored August 31 release date for I’m Having Fun Now, but in the meantime, some enticing items on the duo’s website.

The song “Scissor Runner” is available for download (below), and as long as you don’t live in Arizona, there are several tour dates to look forward to. Unfortunately if you live in The Copper State, you’ll have to hoof it to Utah or Los Angeles, as the duo is boycotting Arizona on account of the recently passed, totally bogus immigration law.

For one week only, Sub Pop is streaming the new Foals album, out today, for free.

Oxford, England-based five piece post-rock outfit Foals are busy touring right now in support of their sophomore album Total Life Forever. That dropped today, and Sub Pop is streaming the entire album free for one week only. Listen to it right here.

Snippets of the album have been online for some time. “Spanish Sahara”, the album’s slow-building first single, has already been given two separate remix treatments since it’s UK release in early April. “This Orient,” meanwhile, rides shotgun in Total Life’s poppier side, with its Bloc Party-esque lyrical repetition and upbeat stride. Listen to those tracks below. And one more time, here’s the link to the whole album:

Stream Conor Oberst covering John Prine while reading about Kid Cudi's arrest, Bonnaroo 2010, and yet-more music from the ever-prolific Ryan Adams.

Kid Cudi started his weekend off on the wrong foot, apparently. The rapper was arrested in New York Friday and charged with criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance.

But he still made it to Bonnaroo, along with the dozens of other artists scheduled to play the Manchester, Tennessee festival. The three-day annual event celebrated its 10th anniversary, and there’s a boatload of photos from the weekend up and ready for viewing.

Think you’ve heard every song in the Ryan Adams vault? Of course not! According to a post at Rawkblog, the prolific DRA has two previously unreleased albums he’ll put out through his Pax Americana label, 2005′s Blackhole and 2006′s III/IV. This follows on the heels of his recent vinyl-only metal album, Orion, and Adams is, according to his Facebook page, at work on some demos as well.

More news from the Conor Oberst camp: The bright eyed singer-songwriter recently gathered his Mystic Valley Band together to play John Prine’s “Wedding Day in Funeralville” as part of a new tribute album, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine. The album also sees contributions from Jim James, Lambchop, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and others. Here’s that Conor track:

World Cup is upon us, and Weezer's so excited they wrote a (free) song for the occasion.

Tomorrow, the US Men’s National team goes head-to-head with England in its first World Cup match, and Weezer is so excited about the event, they wrote and dedicated a song to the boys (the Americans, that is).

Appropriate dubbed “Represent,” it’s a spirited jam I imagine will eventually find its way into “inspired by a true story” sports flicks. Rivers Cuomo is an unabashed soccer fan; his love of the game clearly shows.

Watch the intentionally goofy video below, and download the song on iTunes for free.
