The mash-up-style video was, according to an email blast from BSS, made by a fan (who’s chosen to remain anonymous) and features footage from the Toronto riots sliced together with clips of notable political figures. And Justin Bieber somehow made it in there too.

The electro-funk-addled original appeared on Dam-Funk’s epic, five-LP release Toeachizown (2009). A new single, which includes this remix along with a song from the forthcoming Dam-Funk/Steve Arrington collaboration and a couple re-edits, will drop on Stones Throw sometime this summer. Listen below:

On July 31, Conor Oberst will gather not just his Bright Eyes troupe, but also the Desaparecidos crew, from whom we haven't seen a performance since back in 2002. Also joining are Lullaby for the Working Class and Cursive.

Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth, Rage Against the Machine and My Morning Jacket make up just a fraction of the full list of artists and musicians boycotting Arizona’s immigration law.

Particularly vocal has been Conor Oberst, who recently penned an open letter to Stateside Presents promoter Charlie Levy, in which he stated, among many other things, plans to organize a fundraiser for the Nebraska chapter of the ACLU.

Seems he went through with the plan, and on July 31 will gather not just his Bright Eyes troupe, but also the Desaparecidos crew, from whom we haven’t seen a performance since Conor et al. were thrashing around onstage back in 2002. Also on board for the event is another oldie-but-goodie, indie-folk band Lullaby for the Working Class, as well as Cursive. It’s a hell of a cause when you gather more or less the best of the Saddle Creek back catalog, and expect the amps to be cranked full-blast. (Is it too much to ask we get these guys on board too?)

Proceeds from the concert go to the ACLU Nebraska, currently preparing to file suit against the town of Fremont, Nebraska, who recently passed a measure prohibiting businesses from hiring illegal immigrants.

Grab tickets here.

Minnesota-born David Dondero long ago staked his name in the Narrative American songwriting territory—and further wedges it into that particular ground on this song. We’ve all heard the phrase “Wherever you go, there you are” (I think I had it unironically taped to my doorway as a teenager), but never in the foot-stomping, picking party-worthy form that it appears in here.

The song is the first to surface off Dondero’s forthcoming #Zero With a Bullet, which Team Love will release August 3.
Dondero, in just a couple of days, will take his backing band and banjo on a seriously long North American tour. Dude’s schedule is close to rivaling a certain other musical act that tends to favor epic tour schedules.

New music from Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice's collaborative project!

Jenny Lewis/Jonathan Rice fans are well aware by now that the girlfriend/boyfriend pair are about ready to release a collaborative debut album under their Jenny and Johnny moniker. There’s the album cover above, simultaneously cutesy and saucy, which seems to aptly sum up the entire project, or at least what we’ve heard of it so far.

There’s a rumored August 31 release date for I’m Having Fun Now, but in the meantime, some enticing items on the duo’s website.

The song “Scissor Runner” is available for download (below), and as long as you don’t live in Arizona, there are several tour dates to look forward to. Unfortunately if you live in The Copper State, you’ll have to hoof it to Utah or Los Angeles, as the duo is boycotting Arizona on account of the recently passed, totally bogus immigration law.

The lovable Newmarket, Ontario quartet grows up—or at least hits their mid '20s.

Using the word “fun” to describe a band’s sound isn’t very sophisticated, but that’s what comes to mind whenever I hear the name Tokyo Police Club. Elephant Shell, TPC’s debut full-length that was released back in 2008, was difficult not to enjoy because you got the feeling, when listening, that the barely 21-year old bandmembers had a whale of a time making that record. Then there was that hilarious appearance on Desperate Housewives and a slew of ridiculously creative videos, all further solidifying the band’s reputation as a pack of lively young men armed with spirited jams and having the time of their lives.

Group antics still include things like challenging fans to baking contests and reading Woody Allen books on camera, and Champ, TPC’s second full-length, suggests the Newmarket, Ontario boys—singer/bassist Dave Monks, keyboardist Graham Wright, guitarist Josh Hook and drummer Greg Alsop—are still thoroughly enjoying their career. One need only look to the hyperactive start-and-stop riffs of “Favourite Color” and the almost danceworthy and thoroughly remixed single “Wait Up (Boots of Danger)” for proof. “End of a Spark” is a bouncy, bass-driven tune that will make any beginning-of-the-week commute to work a little less painful, and, from the almost giddy nature of Monks’ singing here, you could theorize the guy finds enjoyment out of even a failed relationship.

But maybe not. Laced between those carefree stretches are moments distinctly more melancholy. Whereas Elephant Shell and the band’s 2006 EP, A Lesson in Crime, both opened with crashing symbols and pep rally-worthy shouts, Champ‘s first track, “Favourite Food,” starts with just a few minor keyboard chords and a lone acoustic guitar before Monks begins to sing: “With a heart attack on your plate/you were looking back on your days/how you spent them all in a blur/when they asked if you were for sure.” He’s shed some of his goofy, schoolboy aura of the past and when he sings, “you know it’s sweet getting old,” it’s not hard to believe he means every word.

He’s tackling a more ambitious vocal range too; “Breakneck Speed” finds him unafraid to wail and drone with equal measure, even if he doesn’t always hit the notes dead-on. Likewise on “Hands Reversed,” Champ’s mellowest track and a restrained number that’s more of an implosion than an explosion. “I’m gonna tell you what to do about yourself/because the breakfast of the champions is a hedonistic hell,” he sings, thusly making you wonder just what the last two years of his life have held. Overall, the sound on the record is airtight, whether the guys are noodling away on guitars (“Frankenstein”), crashing on what sounds like 10 hi-hats (“Big Difference”) or singing about stumbling home drunk in the middle of the night over sweeping synths (“Bambi”).

My one grief with Champ is its length—none of the songs wander too far past the three-minute mark. While this isn’t an anomaly for the band (A Lesson in Crime clocked in at a whopping 16 minutes; Elephant Shell is less than half-an-hour long), it would be nice to see them apply their newfound musical maturity to this area as well. I don’t imagine sinister experimental epics are around the corner anytime soon, but here’s hoping. Maybe when they turn 30.

The smooth sounds of Wilco's John Stirratt and Pat Sansone are coming our way soon...

It’s been a quiet, quiet year as far as news from The Autumn Defense is concerned. With good cause too, since John Stirratt and Pat Sansone have been with Wilco on that never-ending world tour we always seem to be writing about over here.

But according to reports around the web, Stirratt and Sansone will soon release a new album, Once Around, the first since their 2007 self-titled full-length. The pair told Rock ‘N Roll Ghost the new album will likely be released via Yep Roc Records on November 2. A quick tour (quick if you’re a member of Wilco, that is) is slated for November and December.

Stirratt and Sansone played a few songs from the new offering at a recent Lincoln Hall show. Time Out has some nice photos of the performance up right now.
